Lawmakers gear up for more debate on AI in the new session

While in Congress, McNerney was deeply involved in AI policy — he authored a number of bills around the issue and served as co-chair of the Artificial Intelligence Caucus. His bill in the state Senate is just a placeholder that is light on details for now, but McNerney said there are a handful of different issues around AI that he is considering for the upcoming session.

“I think one of my biggest concerns is what it’s going to do to people’s jobs and how we can prevent people [from] being displaced,” he said.

He also has concerns about accountability for people who use AI in an illegal way and unsafely. “I want to make sure AI is safe, that it doesn’t act on its own in a way that would be destructive,” McNerney said.
