AI Bills Incoming

State Sen. Jerry McNerney has fleshed out his slate of artificial intelligence bills this session, with two more measures: one to place safeguards on the technology’s use in critical infrastructure, and another to create nonprofit, third-party panels of AI experts and academics to devise AI safety standards.

“California is a world leader in AI development. So it’s incumbent on our state to ensure that the use of artificial intelligence is safe and beneficial,” McNerney said in a statement.

One bill would task the state attorney general’s office with accrediting panels of AI experts that could certify companies who voluntarily submit to their standards. Companies that undergo the process would gain some legal protections under state law.

The other bill, SB 833, would require state agencies to have human oversight when AI is used in critical infrastructure like transportation, energy communications and emergency services.

“Artificial Intelligence must remain a tool controlled by humans, not the other way around,” McNerney said in a statement. McNerney introduced SB 7 earlier this month to require human oversight of AI systems in the workplace.
