'Bosses should have souls": California’s AI workplace law to take effect in 2027
Governor Gavin Newsom has acted on his final bills as governor, signing more than 1,000 bills and vetoing 120. A total of 1,160 bills made it to his desk this legislative session, according to legislative analyst Chris Micheli.
Artificial intelligence was a significant focus this time around. Micheli says lawmakers introduced more AI bills during this legislative session than ever before, and more AI bills were signed than ever before, reflecting the sign of the times.
Among them is a law designed to prevent workers from being fired by artificial intelligence.
“Nobody wants to be fired by a robot or a machine or by some sort of an algorithm,” said Democratic state Senator Jerry McNerney of Pleasanton.
