Editorial: Redistricting is a Radical Solution Whose Time Has Come

California Sen. Jerry McNerney attended a town hall meeting in Dublin last week. In addition to talking about his policy priorities, as you’d expect from these meet-and-greets, he noted that he supports Gov. Gavin Newsom’s plan to redraw the state’s Congressional districts.

That would seem like an unusual thing for a state legislator to weigh in on, but we live in times where the power of the state as a counter to the federal government has never been more important. In addition, McNerney spent 16 years in the U.S. House of Representatives, so he has firsthand knowledge of how Congress has changed.

In fact, when McNerney chose not to run for re-election to Congress, he said he wanted to run for an open seat in the California Senate, which “actually works together to get things done.”
