McNerney, Bonta Host Virtual Meeting to Educate Immigrants on Current Threats
Tri-Valley State Sen. Jerry McNerney held a virtual town hall meeting May 7 to help immigrants deal with “significant fear and anxiety” resulting from federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) stepped-up efforts to deport non-citizens.
McNerney, a Democrat whose 5th District includes Pleasanton, Livermore and Dublin, as well as San Joaquin County’s farmlands, said it was “imperative, absolutely essential” to inform constituents of their Constitutional rights should immigration agents show up at their doors.
“Our country was built on immigration,” McNerney said. “California, in particular, has a huge immigration history. We should be very proud, and I’m very proud of the history that this brings to California and the culture that it brings to California. It’s incumbent upon myself as an elected official to do everything I can to benefit the folks in our community that are working hard, whether it’s in the fields picking fruits, in the farms or in the restaurants or whatever work is available.
