State to provide seed money for new Pacific School of Medicine

The State of California will provide $2 million as seed money for University of the Pacific’s planned School of Medicine, the university announced on Tuesday.

State Sen. Jerry McNerney, D-Pleasanton, and Assemblymember Rhodesia Ransom, D-Tracy, secured the state funding this week for the medical school planned for Stockton.

The funding was included in A.B. 113 budget legislation approved by the state Legislature on Tuesday. Gov. Gavin Newsom is expected to sign the budget bill in the coming days.

“Physician shortages and barriers to accessing health care are impacting families across our region,” McNerney said. “Our communities need more doctors and greater opportunities for students from the Central Valley to pursue a medical education.”
