Tax credit extension benefits Solano farmers, food bank

Gov. Gavin Newsom has signed legislation extending a state tax credit that benefits local farmers and growers which will also help the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano provide more fresh, locally grown food to families facing hunger, officials say.

Senate Bill 881, authored by state Sen. Jerry McNerney, extends through 2032 a program that provides farmers, growers, and food producers with a 15% state tax credit for donating surplus food to food banks. The bill was approved unanimously by both houses of the Legislature in August and takes effect immediately.
